Tuesday, 5 April 2005 Utagawa TOYOKUNI (1769 - 1825) Festive procession of a noble family and entourage at Mt. Fuji Signed: Toyokuni ga Publisher: Wakasa-ya Yoichi Censor's seal: kiwame Date: c. 1797 Size: oban pentaptych (c. 39 x 26. 5 cms / c. 15 3/8" x 10 3/8" each sheet) Impression: excellent Colors: very good Condition: very good / fine; full paper size, five separate sheets as issued (not glued together). Complete pentaptych. - Rare, particularly in such nice condition. Ref. No.: # 575002 Price: ? 3,950.00 This festive procession of a noble family and its 'court' consists - with one exception - of female participants only, even the palanquin bearers are women. The group is beautifully set against the impressive Mt. Fuji and its foothills in the background. This design probably is a 'mitate' (often facetious depictions featuring pastiche, allusion or parody) of a daimyo's procession.
