Utamaro was very much interested in insect but in this picture, there was no insect in the cage. What is unique in this picture was that a cloth looking like Chinese or Indian cotton was used for the background... a bold experiment that no other Ukiyo-e artists dared. Against the dark arabesque backdrop, he depicted a natural beauty in light summer kimono.
