Display of fireworks at Ryogoku highlighted the mid-summer festivals of Edo. Utamaro achieved a superb color effect by leaving the background almost entirely dark to highlight the colors in front. The boats, tea houses, the arched Ryogoku bridge and the people on it were in silhouettes, making their lights look all the more bright and cheerful.
