This and the following print depict a grouping of deities known as the Thirteen Buddhas. The figures comprise the Buddhist forms of the Ten Kings of Hell in addition to three other deities: the supreme cosmic Buddha Dainichi Nyorai (Sk. Mahavairochana) and the Bodhisattvas Seishi (Sk. Mahastamaprapta) and Koküzö (Sk. Akashagarbha). The Ten Kings of Hell originated in China, where they were worshiped as Buddhist gods who presided over the underworld. The kings were codified as a group in the Mahäyäna Buddhist pantheon during the late Tang dynasty (618–906). The cult of the Ten Kings was introduced into Japan in the late Heian period (1086–1185).
