The Kintai Bridge, elegantly named ""Bridge of the Brocade Sash,"" was famed for its beautiful link arches. It spanned the Iwakuni River, which flows through Iwakuni, in Suö province (present-day Yamaguchi prefecture). Constructed in 1673, and measuring over 680 feet long, the Kintai Bridge is carried from its springing at one bank and across the river to the other in a sequence of five wooden arches supported by a series of stone piers. In this print, Hokusai depicts the bridge through a driving rain. Beyond the gently rolling riverbank are the castle towers of Yoshikawa daimyo. To their right, a broad-based mountain spans nearly the entire horizon. A very narrow range of colors in gray tonalities creates a feeling of windswept rain.
