The Preparatory Drawing: The artist provided the publisher with a preparatory sketch of the design, called a shita-e or gakö-e (preparatory picture). The preparatory drawing for Young Woman with Iris was developed to a high degree of finish, first blocked out in graphite, made graphic by copying the lines in black ink and made vivid by the additions of watercolor, printed color, and colored pencil.
