10/01/2005 Title Sunset Glow Artist Hao Ping born 1952 Signature Signed and numbered by the artist in pencil. Dated 2004 Technique/Medium Woodcut Impression Printed in oil-based inks on a pliable, Chinese paper of middle thickness. Edition Size 80 Numbered 3/80 Description "Sunset glow" Hao Ping's favorite subjects are women of the many ethnic minority groups of Southern Yunan. We contacted the artist about this design and he told us that the girl shown on "Sunset Glow" is from the Wa nationality. Hao Ping often shows women in combination with cranes. Cranes are a symbol of good luck in China and countries with a Buddhist cultural background. Hao Ping is especially strong in combining colors and shapes into impressive compositions. The use of larger flat areas reminds of traditional Japanese ukiyo-e. Also the limitation to a nearly strict two-dimensional depiction is something that he has in common with traditional Japanese woodblock style. His women look elegant, but always unsensual, untouchable. It is not Hap Ping's intention to create moods and emotions. He wants to give the viewer a festival of colors and compositions - as rich, unique and impressive as many of the local festivities in Yunan. Note Hao Ping is one of the 60 contemporary Chinese woodblock artists selected for the collection of the London based Muban Foundation.
