Friday, 18 November 2005 Original, Tsuchiya Koitsu Evening at Mii Temple Woodblock PrintThe following information was provided by an art historian on the faculty of the University of Iowa who personally evaluated this print: "The carver (the left off-set box) was Harada. The printer (the right off set box of the pair) was Yokoi he worked for Doi (publisher) from 1936 to 1965. His earliest work of the images by Tsuchiya Koitsu was so good that he was promoted to principle printer for the rest of his career. So, we know that he could have started making the prints for Tsuchiya Koitsu when they were first created in 1936." "Now, until last year it was thought that the "triple offset boxes", all the seals on the left of your print, indicated that the print was made between the years of 1956 - 1962. However, just this year it has been proved that in 1937 this seal was first used. It is suspected that they could have been printing with it by 1936, but this is not a proven fact as of yet. I think it is very likely that your print was made in 1936, but certainly it was printed no later than between 1956-1962." Additional information about Tsuchiya Koitsu and his work can be found at: http://www.koitsu.com/Koitsu_Complete_Works.htm Condition: This print was brought to the US by an US Army officer who served with the occupation forces in Japan between 1947 and 1950. When I acquired it, the print was in a cheap frame with a NON-Archival mat. There is some age darkening at the extremities. Please see the full-sheet images below showing both the face and verso of the print. There are no tears and the color of the print is very bright. The overall sheet size for this print is about 8" x 11.5" The actual printed area is about 7 1/8" x 10"
