説明:
A Fine Japanese Watercolour Attributed to Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) This item was listed a few weeks ago but the winner, "ineedanap!" never paid and has now been banned by Ebay. We are therefore re-offering it. Hiroshi Yoshida is today known mainly as a print artist. Prior to his career making prints from the 1920s onwards he was primarily a very accomplished painter in watercolours. When a young man he made a trip to the States where he sold enough watercolours to finance his stay in Europe. This watercolour was last year found in an attic in Sussex together with another. Their previous history is not known and they were found when the new occupant of the house was doing renovations. They were both framed and covered in the dirt of years. One of the pair was signed H. Yoshida in Romaji (western writing) and has since been sold. This, one of a similar size and style and in an identical old frame, does not bear his name but is inscribed Hanaeda. It is possibly the name of the location but we have been unable to find a Japanese place name which is similar. As many of Yoshida's watercolour were sold in the West he usually inscribed them in Western characters and it is possible this is a mis-reading of a Japanese name. The scene shows a lake with boats with Mount Fuji in the background. On the right is a village with a boat moored at the jetty and children beside it. There is a washing line with colourful clothing drying. It measures 20 x 13 1/2 ins. (50.8 x 34.3 cms). It is in good original condition with no damage or repairs. As is to be expected with a painting that has been framed it is a little faded and the matting (mount) has left a darker border under it. There is a small splash stain in the bottom margin. The reverse has the remains of paper tape around the edge and an old label numbered "59". It dates from around 1900/1910.
