Imperial envoys, dressed in formal court robes, walk along a rush-mat towards the reception rooms at the shogun's residence within Edo Castle. On their way to an audience with the shogun, the Kyoto courtiers are escorted, guarded and welcomed by retainers of the Kondo and Sakai daimyo, whose respective crests of deer horns and oxalis are displayed on curtains.
