Print no. 46 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" Label Text: 'Torii' gates mark the entrances to Shinto shrines and denote the transition from the mundane to the sacred. They were traditionally made of wood or stone and left either natural or painted vermillion. This large 'torii' stood in the harbor beneath Mount Yuga, an important religious pilgrimage site where a Shinto shrine and Buddhist monastery once stood.
