Every July for the past 500 years, the people of Tsushima and countless visitors witness one of Japan’s most famous festivals. Staged at night on the Tenno River, five Makiwara boats representing the five villages of Tsushima are each made by lashing together two smaller vessels decorated with over 400 large paper lanterns and arranged like a dome.
