In 1183, after years of Taira dominance, Kiso Minamoto Yoshinaka (1154-84) suddenly seized Kyoto. At first hailed as a great liberator, Yoshinaka soon abused his power: he drove the Taira clan and the little boy Emperor Antoku westward, quarreled with the retired emperor Go-Shirakawa, let his troops terrorize the capital and declared himself the head of the Minamoto clan.
