Following their expulsion from Kyoto, the Taira clan used a strip along the coast of Settsu province [west of Kobe] as a base to guard the approach to western Japan and await a chance to recapture the capital. The Minamoto-clan brothers Yoshitsune and Noriyori set out to destroy the stronghold in mid March 1184: Noriyori headed towards the eastern Ikuta-no-mori fortress while Yoshitsune headed southwards over the mountains towards Ichi-no-tani fortress.
