Print no. 43 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" In this print, Hiroshige emphasizes the bows of two large cargo ships sailing by the Takuhi Shrine in the Oki Islands, the shrine’s torii gate visible through the pine trees. The Shinto deity worshipped here was known as a protector of seafarers, and the shrine itself was an important landmark on the perilous northern shipping route. Hiroshige depicts one sailor waving a Shinto wand with paper streamers while two others prepare straw offerings.
