Print no. 48 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" Kannon is the Japanese goddess of mercy, who is often prayed for safe childbirth and seafaring. This print shows the vermillion-lacquered Kannon temple, famous for its stone sculpture of the eleven-headed Kannon, perched atop Cape Abuto. As indicated by the dark sky and pale moon behinds the pines, Hiroshige has used a night scene to contrast the blue of the Inland Sea with the high rocks and illuminated sanctuary.
