Tuesday, 19 June 2007 This is a RARE and Interesting Modern Japanese Woodblock Print. Shima Tamami, Japanese, S&N woodblock, birds, 1961. Striking is the word for this vibrantly coloured, highly stylized image of two birds. Hand signed by the artist. (one of Japan’s best post-war women print-makers. (one of only 10 artists chosen by James A. Michener for inclusion in his seminal book “The Modern Japanese Print ? an appreciation” ? in fact, one of her prints adorns the cover.). This original woodblock is dated 1961 and titled in Japanese (unread). The sheet measures 45 x 30cm (17?’ x 11?”); the image is 38 x 25cm (15” x 10”). Very good condition with excellent colour. The reverse shows some staining but this is not visible from the front. The woodblock is unframed and is not laid down.
