Toshi visited Africa in 1972. This visit unleashed a fascination with African wildlife and scenery that lasted for more than twenty years, resulting in sketches and photographs that were translated into numerous oil paintings and prints, as well as a series of children’s books. The extended panoramic format of this print gives a sense of the vast landscape under the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), here seen grazing alongside zebras under the haze, is unpredictable in nature and highly dangerous to humans. Mount Kilimanjaro, a dormant volcanic mountain in Tanzania, is the highest mountain in Africa and is the highest free-standing mountain in the world; its highest peak rises 19,341 feet above sea level.
