Fukuroi, the twenty-eighth station on the Tökaidö, is located in current Shizuoka Prefecture. Hiroshige portrays a kiosk teahouse on the left, where a traveler rests under the makeshift roof as the teahouse matron and a man (probably a porter) stoke the fire, and another traveler sits on the ground under the tree to free himself from his heavy pack. The first publication on the Tökaidö was produced in the late 17th century, introducing famous places and restaurants along the road. Hiroshige’s Tökaidö series were preceded by Hokusai, who created his first series of the Tökaidö in 1804, and eventually published a total of seven different Tökaidö print series. In 1833 the small publishing company Hoeidö collaborated with a larger established company, Senkakudö, to publish Hiroshige’s first series on the Fifty-three Stations of Tökaidö. This merger generated superb landscape prints (as seen in this gallery), launching Hiroshige’s reputation as the premier landscape print designer of his generation.
